The race shifted venues and ended up at Widener Course where it came to be run at almost seven furlongs, a distance short by 165 feet from 1905 to 1932 but in 1933, the distance was rounded off to 6 ½ furlongs for ease of calculation. It was then shifted to a distance of one mile, 1 1/8 miles and then 1 1/16 miles until they finalized the one mile distance in 2005 and closed the argument. The race is run at Belmont Park each year in October and is a Breeder’s Cup Challenge criteria.
Won by champion colts, Champagne Stakes defined what many race horses were capable of owing to its distance and test of the colt’s endurance to run the length without running out of gas. It also gave them the chance to qualify to Breeder’s Cup Juvenile races that again were imperative to predicting Triple Crown contenders.
