Vehicles For Warfighters - Buying, Selling, Shipping
A military life is, both by necessity and by design, a disciplined and focused one, as well as unadorned with many material goods. In all times and countries, part of what has fed a soldier's pride has been the ability to get by with less, and to endure discomfort and privation. A stripped-down utilitarianism is the lifestyle of a true warrior.
On the other hand, one of the peculiarities of life in America is the frequent inability to get by without a car. For military personnel, especially personnel with families, a motor vehicle is often a necessity, not just for excursions to civilian towns, but, in the case of large military bases, internally as well.
Unfortunately, a soldier can face many pitfalls at every step of the process of buying, selling or moving a vehicle – pitfalls that can turn a convenience into a liability and a source of financial headaches for years to come.
Almost every military base is surrounded by businesses that rely on its personnel for their clientele, and car dealerships are no exception. Large military bases may have several within a stone's throw; unfortunately, some of them ...
... are unprincipled enough to try and take advantage of soldiers, especially those who lack experience or education in financial matters. Since many people join the military straight out of high school, they may not always have the skills to double-check figures, and end up falling prey to unscrupulous dealers.
A favorite sleazy trick is to hide the true Annual Percentage Rate behind caveats. The advertised APR may be extremely low, but, hidden in the fine print, is the caveat: the low rate only applies to buyers with perfect credit. It's not unheard of for soldiers to buy cars, only to end up paying an APR over 20% - a careless decision like that can affect a person's finances for years to come.
The same applies to zero money down. It sounds like a good break, but in reality, it increases the amount of money you will eventually have to pay, since interest is then assessed on every dollar of the car's worth. Ultimately, the more money the buyer can pay up front, the better off they will be in the long run.
The same applies to selling – car dealerships make money on the margins, so going to a used car dealership to sell an old vehicle is an excellent way to get underpaid by thousands of dollars. It's much better to try and sell the car on Craigslist or another classified site.
Finally, if you get reassigned to a different base, moving your car to your new station can be a difficult process as well. It's not always possible to drive it oneself, which is why soldiers need to resort to the services of auto shippers. In that case, care must be taken to deal with a company that will, first, give you a realistic and reliable shipping quote; second, will communicate with you and let you know when the shipping will take place; and third, that your vehicle arrives in the same condition in which it departed.
Patriot Auto Carriers is an auto shipper that will do all of these things, and more.
