How To Choose The Best Orthodontist

As with any healthcare decision, choosing the right orthodontist is largely a matter of selecting a practitioner that meshes well with your goals and lifestyle. Knowing what to look for in an orthodontist can make the process much easier than if you simply go to the person your dentist recommends. Here are some questions to consider when interviewing prospective orthodontists.
What is his or her treatment style?
Some orthodontists pride themselves on achieving absolute perfection, but is that what you really want? For example, many people view the very last molars to be expendable and don't want to pay to have them aligned properly if they come in misaligned. These patients often simply want them removed, but some orthodontists may not feel comfortable with any unnecessary extractions. Some patients may not mind if they experience some slight shifting once braces are removed, while others would be devastated. Make sure your goals align with the orthodontist's treatment style. If they don't, neither of you will be happy with the results.
Do they offer the treatment you want?
If you have your heart ...
... set on having your braces mounted on the backs of your teeth or you want clear braces, make sure that the orthodontists you interview offer them and are completely confident with them. This is especially true for those wanting braces on the backs of their teeth, as this is not a standard procedure and requires more finesse and skill than standard braces. If your treatment plan will require jaw expansion, head gear, or specialty devices, ask prospective orthodontists about them.
What pain management do they have?
Should you be accustomed to receiving laughing gas, Valium, or conscious sedation at the dentist's office, you will doubtless want the same treatment at your orthodontist's office. Surprisingly, orthodontists do not always employ these methods, so it's integral that you ask before making your decision. If you are an anxious patient or have a low tolerance for discomfort, having your usual method of pain control can make the experience far more bearable than going without.
Can you afford them?
There is no shame whatsoever is asking for a fee schedule up front. Orthodontia is not something that can be ignored or put off once it starts. Once you have braces, you will need to be able to afford to have them cared for. Even having them removed and abandoning treatment is an expense. If you have dental insurance, now is the time to make sure that the orthodontist's office accepts it. Make sure you're aware of any additional costs you may be required to pay.
Choosing the right orthodontist depends on many factors. By having given consideration to these issues ahead of time, you will be more informed and able to make the best decision.
