Forget handbags, Hair extensions are the new must have accessory and for good reason too! Until recently, ladies of all ages have had to make a hard choice: do they cut their hair to prevent split ends, or live with damaged hair in the quest to have great long locks. Well, no more, because nowadays you can have your cake and eat it, go girl... keeping the quality and strength of your normal natural hair, while keeping body, style and length with a set of lovely hair extensions.

I know you all know hair extensions are available but if you are wanting to have them done there are a few things you need to take into consideration first

1. Price

Prices vary dramatically when having extensions, from £30 for some clip in to unto £1500 for a good salon to fit them with Russian hair. A decent set of say bonded extensions should set you back between £250 and £550 depending what hair you choose, the difference in price will reflect the time the hair will stay looking like the day you had them fitted, 8 to 10 weeks being average with up to 6 months for the better Russian hair, although be aware that after 6 ...
... months your own hair will have grown a lot and the bonds will not be as tight and close to the head as they began, so choose a happy medium.

2. Permanent or temporary?

One important consideration is how long you want your extensions in for. This decision will solely depend on the reason for getting them in the first place EG: if you just want to look gorgeous for a big date, or a wedding or birthday, and don’t plan to wear them 24/7 temporary hair extensions will be the best choice for you, and a good set of clip in extensions will suffice. On the other hand, if you are just had a bad hair cut and you need it covered while your natural hair grows you are want something a more permanent. Or if you just want long hair that you don’t have to worry about then permanent is the answer. Again budget is always a factor.

2. Real or synthetic?

For me personally this is a no brainier, while synthetic hair is marginally cheaper is is also just that, "synthetic" so as this is my article we will go with human hair all the way. Completely natural looking and can be blended and color matched perfectly to your own hair.

3. Bonded, weave, or tape.

This next choice is to do with the way the extensions are fitted. Generally there are 3 methods that most hair extensions will use, they can either be bonded to the clients head using a cold fusion technique which are small bonds of glue which are heated and the bonds are stuck into your hair creating a very small bond and hard to detect, other bonding methods are micro-rings which involve no glue but tends to fall out a bit quicker than bonds and shrink tubes which in my experience are not great for longevity. Or you can get the extensions weaved in to your existing hair. a specialist technique that has become very popular but takes a very long time to fit and generally doesn't last as long as the bonded method, the upside is no products are used on the natural hair although knotting is common. The quickest and cheapest method would be to have a weft of hair taped into your own hair in strips rather than individual bonds; this will only last 6-8 weeks though, more like a semi-permanent method.

Be aware that extensions aren’t for everyone, they itch a LOT, they take a lot of aftercare and like Pringles "once you pop you can't stop" which can become a regular expense.

4. Choosing your extensions

Choose an extensions with a good well organized website or an advert in the local paper, you know that these people care about there business as they are willing to pay to promote it, there are many ads on the likes of gum tree offer extensions for £50 or even less, DONT, its your hair and you will pay for it again and again if it is not done properly. Ask friends or approach people in then street who have had extensions, get recommendations if you can.

so that’s that, I hope my bit of advice helps in your quest to look beautiful.
