Kumquat fruit is a sweet and tangy flavored and a winter season delicacy. It is part of Citrus family, which includes limes, oranges and lemons. There are many fruit extracts of Citrus family. Kumquat plants are usually short in size and can reach a height of 5ft. Although it tastes very close to orange, it is much smaller and oval-shaped, approximately the size of an olive. Kumquat plants originated from Asia Pacific and south Asia, and kumquat has many names, among others, is kinkan in Japanese, somchid in Thailand, geumgyul in Korean, jinju in Mandarin, gim-gam in Hokkien, muntala in Nepali, tac, kim quat or quat in Vietnam. The fruit is considered ripe when it reaches a yellowish-orange stage and has just shed the last tint of green. It can be eaten deliciously as raw, preserves, jelly and marmalade. This fruit is very useful in bronchitis, cough and cold, laryngitis, pharyngitis, sore throat, fevers, diarrhoea, dysentery, spleen disorders etc.

The kumquat fruit and leaves contain organic acids and sugars, while the leaves contain essential oil. Studies show that the fruit has expectorant and antitussive properties, both of which play a role in the cure of sore throat.

Cultivated kumquats are much harder than other citrus fruits, such as oranges, and even though they are very hardy, kumquats produce even larger and sweeter fruits when grown in warm weather. Soluble fibre helps to lower blood cholesterol levels and may protect against heart and circulatory disease. They provide readily accessible energy. Kumquats provide the B vitamin, riboflavin, which is a component of various enzymes involved in energy metabolism.

Water-soluble fibers, such as the pectin found in fruit may be particularly helpful in lowering triglycerides. Kumquat contains moderate amounts of minerals like copper, calcium, manganese, potassium, zinc, selenium and iron which help in biological functions such as controlling blood pressure and heart rate, formation and production of red blood cells and cellular oxidation.

Though kumquats have a wide range of benefits, remember that moderation is important. Too much consumption can lead to the depletion of calcium in the body, resulting in dental decay and bone disease.
