The purpose of high-throughput screening (HTS) is to cross-examine large compound library in the context of a biological target to accurately identify active compounds that can be used as starting points for further chemical optimization and drug development. HTS allows screening compound libraries containing several million compounds within a few days. For a successful high-throughput screening campaign and in order to maximize the chances of finding a lead compound, it is desirable to have a compound library with the maximum degree of structural diversity.
Compound libraries are usually designed for focusing on a particular target or physicochemical properties. The focused targeting reduces compound library size but still provides a substantial number of active compounds. This procedure saves time and resources required for high-throughput screening.
