Radio Broadcasting In India
In the early 1920, radio broadcasting was established in India. In 1923, the first programme was broadcasted by radio club of Bombay. This was pursued by creation of a Broadcasting service that commenced broadcasting on 23 July 1927 on an experimental basis in Bombay and Calcutta within the agreement between Government of India and a private company called the Indian Broadcasting Company Ltd. In 1930, this company went to liquidation and Indian State Broadcasting Service under the department of Controller of Broadcasts was made up. In June 1936, Indian State Broadcasting Service was renamed as All India Radio. All India Radio also was referred as Akashvani in 1956.
AIR had a network of six stations and 18 transmitters at the time India achieved Independence in 1947. 2.5 % was the coverage of the area and just 11% of the population. Now AIR broadcasts has 231-radio station and 373 transmitters whose coverage widens to 91.79% by area and 99.14% by population. ... Service, it covers 27 languages comprise of 16foreign and 11 Indian languages. AIR controls its broadcasting services on Medium Wave, short Wave and FM. The FM service utilizes a bigger bandwidth to give a programme service of high fidelity and lesser noise distortion. AIR progresses in FM network with its channels viz AIRFM Gold, and AIR FM Rainbow.
AIR has developed a three-tier system of broadcasting that is national, regional, and local. It provides to the mass communication requires of the people through it’s a variety of stations spread across the country. They give music, spoken word, news and other programmes. Local stations meet the precise area for requirements for the listener. At present All India Radio o runs its services through, Primary Channels, Commercial Broadcasting Service (Vividh Bharati), FM Channels (Rainbow and Gold), Local Radio Station (LRS), National Channel, DTH, and External Services broadcast, other niche channels: Amrutha Varshini. With the arrival of private channels in FM Radio, the Public Broadcaster's control has been in danger. AIR also has been adopting new technologies and techniques so to compete with the upcoming channels and to constantly reach out the masses.
