Insulation is a fairly simple material to work with. For normal installation one does not require costly tools or equipment. A tape measure, utility knife, straight edge, insulation knife and a stapler are generally all one will require. It is also a better idea to shelter the body. So, use lightweight work gloves, a long sleeved loose fitting shirt, goggles or defensive glasses, and a dust mask. Fiberglass insulation enlarges when it is opened. They compress the material at the factory. When opened, it may enlarge 500 to 1,000 percent! Thus, don't open the material until one is ready.

When installing insulation in cavities that include wires, it is a better idea to partially split the insulation where it crosses the wire. The idea is to sum up the wire with insulation. If one does not do this, there will be an annulled space at the back of the insulation! The insulation will not be able to enlarge fully. It has been observed installers fail to split the insulation on several jobs. Don't let this occur on the job! Insulation should be placed approximately on all windows ...
... and doors to fill the gap between the frame and the rough opening. The entire gap should be filled, but, make sure it should not be packed too tightly! It can bulge the frame and one will lose insulating value when insulation is too tightly packed.

An External Wall Insulation system is a thermally insulated, defensive, attractive exterior cladding system that includes foamed polystyrene, mineral wool polyurethane foam, together with reinforced cement based mineral or synthetic finish plaster. The width of thermal insulation should be at least 10 to 15 centimeters, to make a partition with a heat transmission factor of U=0.25-0.3 W/m2K. The materials utilized need a λ≤0.05 W/mK heat transmission factor. Application of thermal insulation 5 centimeters wide will not get better wall insulation to the "valid" level. This means that in layer walls with a continuous air void 3 to 6 centimeters wide, standard cavity insulation will be insufficient. In several homes, elements such tangible beams or lintels act as thermal bridges offering poor insulation. Old homes should not have less than 12 centimeters (4.7 in) thick thermal insulation.

External insulation is the easiest and simplest way of thermally upgrading houses and buildings
without enormous distraction as all works can be carried out whilst the buildings are occupied. External wall insulation is more effectual than normal cavity wall insulation and it can reduce your energy bills by up to 25-30% p.a. or £500 a year on your energy bills.
