Uncle Mo’s Recent Speed Figure Suggests Top Performance For 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic

As stable mate Stay Thirsty continued his ascent in the handicap division by taking both the Jim Dandy and Haskell, there was still this feeling that do what he would, he was still running in the shadow of his more celebrated stable mate.
After Saturday’s Kelso and Jockey Club Gold Cup were run, it is easy to see why the racing public was not yet ready to give up on Uncle Mo. The feeling of unfulfilled potential was just too great. We knew ever since he broke his maiden at Saratoga by 14 lengths that he was no ordinary horse and that he had not yet had a chance to truly show the racing world what he was about. Stable mate Stay Thirsty received an estimated 102 for his third place effort in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.
With his dazzling victory in the Grade 2 Kelso, Uncle Mo has catapulted to the head of the three year old division and he did it with a Beyer Speed Figure that signifies a bona fide Grade 1 horse.
He received the highest Beyer for a race run over six furlongs this year and the highest Beyer in the last 9 months of any horse on any surface at any distance – a 118 Beyer Speed Figure. Only Big ...
... Drama can boast a higher Beyer of 120, but that was at the sprinting distance of six furlongs and that was way back in January.
We should note that Havre de Grace earned a 105 running on the same day over the same track, although she was eased up the last 10 strides or so and perhaps she could’ve registered a 110 or better if she had been pushed.
So at last, we have a superstar in the handicap division. It seems for too long we have been settling for horses that are more like solid Grade 2 animals leading the division. No disrespect to Tizway and Flat Out. Tizway is actually a decent animal, but in terms of Beyer Speed Figures, he is very average for the older male handicap division when compared to horses of years past. It is expected that there is at least one horse each year that is routinely running 115 Beyer Speed Figures give or take a few points.
The best Tizway had done this year was a 113 Beyer in a 1 mile race, which is almost as good as the 118 Uncle Mo received in the 1 mile Kelso.
Still, until Uncle Mo registered his monster 118 figure, we had not yet seen a horse run the kind of figure to really get excited about.
Put it this way, in many other years, Tizway would not be even close to being the favorite for the Breeders Cup Classic. In fact, if he had raced in either of the Classics his illustrious father Tiznow won, he would be considered a huge long shot.
118 is what you want to see for a true star in the handicap division, and that is why it makes Uncle Mo clearly the one to beat.
