Diet For Diabetes
General dietary advice:
It is generally important to think about a healthy diet and active lifestyle. If you are overweight have a greater risk of developing diabetes. Then it is important to try to lose weight by reducing intake of calories and increase physical activity. The diet should be based on lean meat, fish, eggs, cereals, vegetables, fruit and low-fat dairy products. Because people with diabetes have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, the type and amount of fat is also of great importance. Foods such as rice and potatoes contain much of what is called "fast carbs". This leads to a rapid rise in blood sugar, you should be careful with eating large quantities of this. Milk contains milk sugar (lactose), which also leads to a relatively rapid blood sugar rise. This rise in blood sugar is not as high as when consuming the same amount of regular sugar (sucrose).
Dairy and Diabetes:
Milk and dairy products contain many important nutrients. Calcium, iodine and several of the B vitamins are among these. Dairy products contribute over 70% of calcium intake in a typical Norwegian diet. If dairy ...
... products are omitted entirely or partially from the diet will be particularly difficult to meet calcium needs. Many people with diabetes believe that they can not drink milk, which is not correct. Milk contains no lactose, and lactose will, like other simple sugars affect blood sugar. For this reason, people who have diabetes do not drink large amounts of milk at a time. It goes just fine to drink a glass of milk in connection with a meal and during the day you can drink 2-3 glasses of milk, which is equivalent to ½ liters.
Choose the lightest milk variants:
It is recommended that the general population to choose a lean milk variant. This is also good advice for people with diabetes should limit their intake of fat. Extra-fat milk and skim milk are good alternatives. There are correspondingly lean varieties are fermented. Lactose content is usually the same in sweet and fermented products. If you choose a flavored sour variant should however be aware that these also contain added sugar so that the total sugar content is higher. As thirsty drink water should be chosen to avoid blood sugar to rise.
Cheese as an alternative to milk:
It is as much calcium in two slices of cheese (slices of 10 grams) in a glass of milk, making cheese for an important source of calcium. Solid yellow cheeses do not contain lactose, only proteins and varying amounts of fat. There are many different cheeses on the market, and it is possible to select a skinny model with only 10% fat or varieties that are easy and contain about 17% fat. Many cheese spreads are lean and are in the same way as cheese good calcium sources. Here are the products down to 3% fat. Cheeses are not recommended for everyday use for people with diabetes because of the high fat content. Cheese and prime are concentrated sources of lactose, and will increase blood sugar. These products should be either omitted or used in small quantities.
