Celiac Disease And Low Bone Density
Osteoporosis is a condition that develops over several years, where the skeleton is less and less density and risk of fracture increases. People with untreated celiac disease are especially prone to osteoporosis. In untreated celiac disease, many nutrients will be absorbed to a sufficient extent, and deficiency diseases may occur. This includes important nutrients like calcium and vitamin D.
What is celiac disease?
Celiac disease is an intestinal disease caused by the body reacts to gluten protein. Gluten is found in all our common cereals: wheat, rye, barley and oats. In people with celiac disease to gluten proteins damage the lining of the small intestine so that it can not absorb nutrients in food and drink normally. Common symptoms of celiac disease are diarrhea and other digestive ailments such as abdominal pain and distention, emaciation and weight loss, and fatigue, and other more general symptoms.
How is the diagnosis?
The diagnosis of celiac disease must be made by a doctor. First, take a blood test that can give an indication of whether a person has celiac disease or not. If this is positive, ...
... you go on to take a tissue sample from the intestine. It is customary to make a so-called small bowel biopsy, which means that you take a tissue sample from the small intestine that could detect abnormalities.
Consequences of untreated celiac disease:
If you have an untreated celiac disease for a long time, the poor absorption of nutrients leads to a lack of several important nutrients such as iron, vitamin B12 and calcium. As a result, you could run the risk of developing such as anemia (iron deficiency) or osteoporosis.
Gluten-free diet:
If celiac disease is detected, one must be on a lifelong gluten-free diet. Oats are naturally gluten free, but because it is usually treated in the grain mills that also treat other grains, polluted it. Oats are grown and processed separately from the other grain types can be used by adult celiac, but persons under 18 years are recommended to stay away from all four cereals.
Transient lactose intolerance:
Some who are diagnosed find that they do not tolerate dairy products the first time. This is because the small intestine transient lacks the enzyme to break down milk sugar (lactose). When you have eaten gluten-free diet a few weeks, however, the intestine will be healthy again and thus, most tolerate milk sugar again. It is very important that people with celiac disease care to ingest NOK calcium, this mineral is among the substances that the body has trouble taking up in sufficient quantities, while the intestines had injuries due to ingestion of gluten.
