Goldikova has nothing left to prove. She has won three consecutive Breeders’ Cup Turf Mile races, all in spectacular fashion. It reminds one of Michael Jordan who came out of retirement after having taken three straight championships in the early 90’s – he had done it all, anything more is just icing on the cake. Despite all the talk in the United States centering on Zenyatta these past few years, no one can dispute the greatness of this mare and certainly deserves as much press as the Queen.

She did hit a little bump in the road this weekend in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville, a race in which she was bidding for her 15th Group 1 victory. She swept to the lead past the frontrunners but Immortal Verse who is three years younger than her and getting 7 lbs from her, made a powerful move to the lead from which Goldikova could not re-rally despite a bold effort.

Her connections did offer any excuse and just admitted that she was second best this day, however, some pundits have noted that she does not life the soft ground over which the Prix Jacques le Marois was run as well as she prefers firm going

... to this race she was beaten my multiple Group 1 winner Canford Cliffs who dueled with her for the stretch of the Queen Anne Stakes back in June. She had struck the lead but Canford Cliffs was not giving up and gradually wore her down, though she fought on bravely until the wire, losing by one length. The 2011 Breeders’ Cup Turf Mile may prove to be an exciting stage for a rematch between these two, as Canford Cliffs has been mentioned as a possibility for the Turf Mile by assistant trainer Richard Hannon, Jr.

She will likely have one more race in France before she returns to Churchill Downs this fall for a chance to become a four time consecutive winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf Mile. The Prix du Moulin or the Prix de la Foret are the main ones under consideration. A few horses have won the race twice, including Miesque who won in 1987 and 1988, whose jockey Freddie Head is now Goldikova’s trainer, Lure who won in back to back years in 1992 and 1993 and Da Hoss who won it in both 1996 and 1998. Goldikova already has the record for most wins in the Turf Mile with three.

Goldikova is a daughter of Anabaa and has amassed earnings of over $6 million (USD).
