Leaf Extract Could Prevent Liver Cance
Liver cancer is the fifth-most-common cancer in the world. Liver cancer usually has a poor prognosis. Dealing effectively with the disease means treatments that are directed at early detection and diagnosis. Of almost equal importance are prognosis and survival, as well as prevention of the progression of the disease.
The aim of chemotherapy treatments is to stop the development and progression of tumors through the use of nutrients, herbal preparations, and/or drugs.
Encouraging dietary intake with herbal supplements has the potential to be an effective strategy to combat liver cancer. It is thought that some herbs have the power to limit DNA injuries that could lead to the development of cancers and other chronic degenerative diseases.
Extract Prevents DNA Damage
In a recent clinical trial, a research team led by Professor Malay Chatterjee from Jadavpur University investigated the cancer-preventive mechanisms of Acanthus ilicifolius (popularly known as “Harkach Kanta”). Harkach Kanta is found widely throughout the mangroves of India, as well as in other Asian countries like Singhal, Burma, China ...
... and Thailand.
Mice that had been transplanted with tumors were given Harkach Kanta to determine its effect on the tumors and its ability to halt the spread of the malignancies. The researchers found that the leaf extract of the plant was significantly effective in preventing DNA and chromosomal damage in the livers of the tumor-bearing mice. They also found that the Harkach Kanta treatment was able to lengthen the mean survival time of the mice to a significant degree.
The mice showed no signs of harmful symptoms from taking the herbal supplement.
The researchers concluded that Harkach Kanta could be used as a potential chemo-protector against cancerous growth in the liver.
This research opens up a promising avenue in cancer prevention with the use of herbal plants. Chaterjee and his research team were encouraged enough by the results of the study that they are calling for further preclinical evaluation of Harkach Kanta. Further study of its anti-tumor abilities and isolation of its active ingredients will provide a better understanding of how the herb could protect against liver cancer. Herbal supplements such as Harkach Kanta may one day be at the forefront of cancer preventative therapy.7
