Foaled in 2006, to sire Medaglia d’ Oro and dam Lotta Kim, Rachel Alexandra was born on January 29th and went on to capture numerous titles in her racing career of three years. The only surviving foal from Lotta Kim’s progeny, Rachel overcame many more challenges in her racing career only to become one of the most renowned and distinguished fillies of her time.

Named the 2009 Horse of the Year, Rachel Alexandra undertook the Preakness, the second leg of the Triple Crown only to win it with a record setting performance of being the only filly in 85 years to accomplish such a feat after Nellie Morse in 1924. With an impressive array of wins under her belt, Rachel Alexandra’s jockey was the esteemed Calvin Borel and trainer Steve Asmussen. Sporting a white streak on her forehead, Rachel was more of a front lead runner, the pace setter and also often the stalking companion who would eventually run you out of gas and go on the capture the title herself; Rachel was a terrific runner.

But of her many remarkably magnificent performances, her Preakness run was by the far the most impressive victory for any filly in world horse racing history.
The memorable Preakness win for Rachel Alexandra made her the first filly in 85 years to win against a field full of mares seconding the Kentucky Derby winner Mine that Bird by a length and also bringing jockey Calvin Borel onboard forever with her.
