The commercial landscaping industry is a multi-million dollar (possibly even a billion dollar) industry. Simply put, very large sums of money are spent annually on landscaping projects in the commercial context. We talk of landscaping being done in the commercially to differentiate it clearly from domestic landscaping: that which people do when they establish lawns or plant trees in the backyards to their own homes. Domestic landscaping is also a remarkably huge industry, but it is not our focus here, for now. Landscaping is specifically said to have been done in the commercial context when the lawns are established and trees planted on organizational compounds, new real estate developments, shop-fronts and so on.

Now one particular question is always bound to come up, whenever a discussion on the grandeur of commercial landscaping projects is held. That is the question as to where the funds for such projects come from. And that is the question we venture to seek possible answers for, as we explore the three most common sources of funds for landscaping projects in the commercial context. And without further ado, those ...
... three sources of funds include:

Organizational ‘housekeeping’ budgets. It emerges that many organizations (both profit-oriented and non-profit oriented) organizations tend to set aside a certain sum of money for housekeeping issues. It is under this vote that you will tend to find a provision for landscaping projects, alongside other things like the cleaning budget, the office catering budget and other such things.
In organizations which use this model, people keen on networking with a view to ultimately clinching the commercial landscaping project tenders would be well advised to focus their networking efforts on the ‘housekeeping’ department heads. These are usually members of the wider administration department. Worth noting though is the fact that most of the organizations whose provision for landscaping funds is made in the housekeeping budget tend to be quite ‘tight’ in terms of what they are willing to spend on the landscaping. Under this arrangement, landscaping is viewed as simply another aspect of housekeeping, which has some effect in the wider scheme of things in the organization, but not a very huge impact nonetheless.

Marketing or public relations departmental budgets. There are organizations which view landscaping as something which can have an impact on their bottom-lines (in case of profit-oriented organizations). There are also like-minded non-profit organizations, which view landscaping as something which can have an impact on their reputations, attraction of funding, and other parameters through which they gauge their effectiveness. Such organizations then make provisions – typically quite hefty ones – for landscaping in their marketing or public relations departmental budgets. It follows then, that for someone networking with a view of ultimately clinching the commercial landscaping projects, the right way to go about would be by focusing the networking efforts on members of the marketing or public relations departments of the targeted firms.

Real estate project ‘finishing’ budgets. As we saw earlier, there are cases where we see very impressive lawn (and other landscaping features) established on recently completed apartment or office blocks. These are meant to attract people into buying or renting those newly completed real estate developments. The money for such commercial landscaping projects is usually provided under the project ‘finishing’ budgets, alongside the funding for things like paving, painting and fencing of the new real estate developments.
