Verbal Abuse - Narcissism Cured
Verbal abuse does not leave bruises and scars and cannot easily sensed by others.
Still verbal abuse creates emotional pain and mental anguish. It also leads to
Emotional as well as mental abuse. Usually one person is blaming, accusing, even
name calling, and the other is defending and explaining. Verbal abuse is not felt on the skin but sensed by the soul. The soul hurts; the self-esteem is pierced with the negative and penetrative words that affect your self-esteem and the damage is thus internal.
Physical or domestic abuse is easily identified. There is no doubt, once you have been hit, that you have been abused. You don’t second guess yourself because the bruises and scars are visible evidence that abuse has taken place. Verbal abuse on the other hand can be categorized in any of the following ways:
• Being called names by your spouse – any negative kind of name calling is
Unacceptable. They may also raise questions against you that may be abusive.
Criticism of your character and taste may come under the same.
• ...
... Using words to shame – any kind of mocking words to humiliate you for what
You believe or who you are.
• Yelling, swearing and screaming - No threat should be taken lightly, even if your
Spouse tells you they are only joking, especially if it causes you to change
Behaviors or to feel on guard in the relationship.
Here are some steps you can take if faced with Verbal abuse:
• Abuse is never justified so, you should never feel that it is your fault.
• Let the abuser know how hurtful their words are and set boundaries on what
You will not accept from your abuser. Disengage quickly from non constructive
Conversations and do not try and argue with your abuser or convince them with
Words.
• Talk to people in your community about what is happening and seek support
from people who have influence with your spouse.
• Surround yourself with a support network of family and friends. Don’t tell them
the whole story about the conflict - just tell them about the abuse.
• Your personal safety is very important. If the verbal abuse escalates to physical
abuse or you feel intimidated, it is vital you speak with the police.
• Threatening to leave can escalate the abuse and may put you in danger and so
don’t talk about leaving or divorce in the heat of a fight.
• If your spouse becomes angry stay calm, walk away and don’t react as per his/
her expectations. Your calm and mature behavior will be considered as a step
back from the fight.
• Use actions instead of words to set boundaries. For example you may decide to
talk to the police or your spouse’s boss about your concerns.
• Do not expect your spouse’s family to be sympathetic with your problems with
your spouse.
