I’m Lost
Why were the benefits which the running brought usually more than they expected.
One day in the early September, the weather was breezy and sunny, it was very appropriate for running. At that time, I was participating in a ten miles and a half race. And just ran a few miles. The road we ran was real mischief, along the way we met a few steep slopes and it was tough to run. However, I still felt free and relaxed. Despite these steep slopes, it would be a pleasant race.
Not far away front of me was Peggy. Her job was a teacher in New York State. It was also very easy for her to run. Her steps were vigorous and the speed was the same with my speed. This speed was very comfortable for me, so I determined not to surpass her; when she determined the appropriate speed, why did I seek for the speed? In a little while, when she was tired, it was not late to pass her.
Thereupon, I followed behind her. Firstly you should run five miles north and then turn to west, over a mile steep slope, and then turn back to south along a meandering route. The race was becoming more and more difficult. Then the route had still left ...
... four miles, the real difficult game had already began. I felt dyspnea and two legs turned to jelly. Peggy surpassed a young man who participated in the race. She obviously knew him, because when she ran past him, they applauded to each other. Their conversation made me uncomfortable. People would not have a conversation in the race, unless the feeling was very good. Peggy's feeling was obviously very good. I could see that her pace was still full of elasticity. But if I had some elasticity, now it had already long gone.
Yet, the distance between her and me was short. If she felt tired, I could transcend her. So, I did not abandon absolutely. We were close to a slope which was very steep and made people tired easily. That would be an ordeal to us. We would reach the finishing line after running only a mile. The situation passing this steep slope would almost be the determinants of who would pass the finishing line first.
When I was running on the steep slope laboriously, I had a few minutes without noticing her. But when I looked up at her, Peggy had already run farther. Originally she was in the lead five yards, later ten yards, then she ran farther. It was obvious that I could not catch up her. I certainly lost. The race gave me a significant lesson. Men and women were parted completely in the books that people read about running. Women were always considered that they were weak and slow, and they were not better at sports than men. For example, people always told them the method of putting the foot and placing the arm. The perspective of people was that, any man understood these things. But, just as the example of Peggy showed clearly that, the similarities between male runners and female runners were more significant than the difference.
