How To Assess Animal Care Costs Realistically
People considering taking up new pets are usually advised to assess the animal care costs they will have to incur on account of those pets first. The aim of this assessment is to give the people considering taking up the pets an idea as to whether or not they can actually afford the pets. But, as it turns out, most people who undertake this sort of assessment soon come to realize that they underestimated the costs. Such underestimation of costs in dangerous in the sense that it can make one take up pets he or she can’t really afford. Thus, if the assessment is to be useful, it has to be realistic.
The first key to realistic assessment of animal care costs lies in having a good understanding of the main items/votes under which you are likely to incur costs. The second key to realistic cost estimation would be found in making adequate provisions and allowances – seeing that so many unexpected things are likely to come into the picture.
All said and done, some of the main items/votes under which you are likely to incur costs would include:
Animal food: this is likely to be the biggest expense. If you want ...
... your animals to be healthy and happy, you will need to buy them nutritious foods, and most probably, a few supplements here and there. The supplements are meant to provide them with nutrients they can’t find in the food. You can buy ready made animal food, or buy the raw materials you need to prepare your own animal food. Either way, you spend quite a bit of money.
Here, you need to make provisions and allowances for the fact that the animals’ food consumption rates are likely to go up, as they grow up. You also have to make an allowance for the fact that some food is inevitably wasted in the course of preparation and serving. Thus, if a given animal is supposed to consume a kilogram of food per day, you may need to buy one and a half kilograms, to cater for the inevitable losses.
Animal healthcare. Specific items you need to purchase here would be the vaccinations necessary for various animals, and the medications you need to keep the animal healthy (including things like de-wormers, which many people tend to overlook).
Here, you need to make an allowance for the fact that animal healthcare costs are likely to go up, as the animal ages.
Animal cleaning and exercise. If you can’t do it yourself, you may need to pay someone to clean the space where the animal lives. Even if you do it yourself, you’d have to incur some expenditure on cleaning chemicals. You may also need to pay someone to physically clean the animal on your behalf, or buy stuff to do it yourself.
A necessary allowance to make here would be for the fact that animal cleaning needs tend to go up in certain seasons (for instance, the rainy season, when the animals keep introducing mud into their dwellings).
Animal fencing. You will need to buy the fencing materials and, in some cases, pay someone to do the fencing for you too. Quite a bit of money can be spent in this way.
A necessary allowance for you to make here would be for the fact that fences need to be maintained on a regular basis, after installation. Thus, you shouldn’t be thinking of fence installation costs alone, but also fence maintenance costs, whenever you think of the fencing aspect in animal care.
