The basic problem most Christians have is that they try to seperate the two. Gifts are given for anniversaries, birthdays, graduations and a miriad of other occasions for which there is a reason. Christmas, however is the only holiday in which gifts are given totally out of love and in honor of the one who gave us the greatest gift of all-salvation.

Christmas is the one time of year when children are taught to give gifts just out of love. For parents and all adults, this is the one time of year when they have the opportunity to give as Jesus directed us to in Mathew 6:2-4 (2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.) It is also one opportunity to teach our children to give with love and with no thought of "what will I get out of it?"

The candy canes were created to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. They are in the shape of the shepherds staff, to remind us of the good shepherd who came to reclaim His lot sheep. They are white to remind us of the virgin birth and the purity of Jesus. They are colored with red, three small stripes to remind us of the stripes he recieved, and one wide red stripe to remind us of the blood He shed for us.

The Christmas traditions follow us through our whole life. First as a child as we recieve gifts for no reason other than we are loved. Given by a mythical man no one has ever seen just because he loves the children. As we grow and realize those gifts were given by our parents, we rejoice in the fact that they were given because we were loved and we continue the tradition of giving out of love throughout our entire lives. A tradition begun 2000 years ago by three "wise men" has continued and has helped many of us know the wonderful feeling of unconditional love. The love given to us by Jesus-freely-with no strings attached-and just because He loves us.

Santa, Christmas and religion go very well together and should not be seperated, but should be celebrated in every household where Christ reigns, for what better way to celebrate His birth, than by giving the gift of love to all we meet.
