Music Plays A Role Of Easing Depression
Music therapy may be helpful for depression, says a new Systematic Review from The Cochrane Library. Music is an incredibly powerful form of expression. It combines both words and sound to deliver a message. Certain songs that one hears on the radio can trigger specific memories in one's mind. Listening to music can reduce chronic pain by up to 21 per cent and depression by up to 25 per cent. Approaches can be active or receptive: active techniques might be used when participants cannot articulate difficult feelings.
The finding that music therapy offers a real clinical benefit to depression sufferers comes from a review by the Cochrane Collaboration, a not-for-profit group that reviews health care issues. In receptive music therapy, a person listens to music with a therapist, and the music can be used for relaxation and motivation and as a bridge to emotions, cognitive work, personal development, and self-reflection. In active music therapy, the patient and therapist play improvisational music together. Research has shown that music with strong rhythms can stimulate brain waves, and that resonates in sync with the beat.
There ...
... is a very strong connection between music and emotion. Most people have the ability to recall memories that are associated with a particular song and the feelings that surround that memory. Change in brain waves brought by the music also allows the brain to shift gears more easily in their own need. Music therapy might be particularly useful for adolescents who may reject a traditional form of counseling.
Music therapy is considered as a cost effective service because it can be done even from home. The patients can listen to music under the supervision of the therapist over a week. For many people, before Prozac and Zoloft days, music was the sole therapy. Music can also make people feel more in control of their pain and less disabled by their condition. Other studies have shown a benefit from music therapy in the treatment for autism, dementia, learning disabilities, strokes and pain management during labor and birth.
Many people with severe depression may turn to medicines; that is not a wise idea. All anti depressants have side effects. Take Zoloft for instance, Zoloft side effects include nausea, insomnia, ejaculation problems, diarrhea, dry mouth, loss of appetite and so on. Many people even have a Zoloft lawsuit because of these Zoloft side effects. Safe and natural way is to try methods of no side effects, such as herbal medicines or music.
