Is The E-type The Most Beautiful Car Of Them All?

In the 200-plus year history of the automobile, it’s fair to say that there have been a lot of pretty cars made – but perhaps none more so than the E-Type Jaguar.


As it has been widely reported, 2011 marks 50 years since the first, iconic E-type Jag rolled for the production line at Browns Lane, Coventry to much fanfare, and it seems that the gorgeous sports coupe is en vogue as much now as it was back in the swinging sixties.


Back then it was the toast of the celebrity elite, with pop culture favourites of the day including George Best, Brigitte Bardot, Tony Curtis and Steve McQueen all bagging the famous Jag.


But what was it about the car that got pulses racing? Well, when you take in consideration that Ferraris of the time cost three times more and supplied less horsepower, it certainly didn’t hurt establish the marque as an icon of 1960s motoring. And with more than 70,000 being sold during its 14-year lifespan, it seems that customers showed their appreciation with their wallets, rather than just with gushing praise.


Even the king of styling ...
... himself, Enzo Ferrari, titled the E-Type Jag as “the most beautiful car ever made upon its 1961 release. Praise indeed.


Mike O'Driscoll, Managing Director Jaguar and Chairman of Jaguar Heritage, said: "Half a century of progress has not diminished the significance of the E-Type. It was a sensation when it was launched, and remains Jaguar's most enduring and iconic symbol."


Here’s to another 50 years of appreciation.
