Telecommuting has become increasingly popular these days. It used to be that stay-at-home moms were the only ones attracted to making the home an office, but now more and more people work from home. Without the transportation and clothing costs, plus the emotional freedom from the stresses of the daily commute and office politics, the advantages of telecommuting are numerous.

The popularity of working at home has its own challenges as well. Many people who try it soon find out that one cannot just work anywhere at home. In order be a great telecommuter, one should have a designated area in the house to do work, free from disturbance and complete with the necessary tools to work effectively. Setting up an office at home, complete with all the home office furniture is ideal for maximum productivity.

One challenge in setting up a home office is making it functional and personal at the same time. It should be a place where the home worker can be efficient and comfortable, but not so comfortable as to encourage snoozing or surfing the net instead of working. Thus, a home office should be a mix of creativity ...
... and functionality.

The space for the home office is very important. Choosing one would mean having a space where everyone in the house, including the home worker, would recognize it as a place for work. This means the space should be free of non-office activities such as lounging, sleeping and eating. While dining tables can serve as a great desk when one is starting out, they are better for family meals than as long term office equipment. It would be ideal for the home office to be equipped with just the necessary furniture – a computer desk or armoire, an office desk, an ergonomic chair and a table for other electronic equipment like a fax machine and telephone. Other furniture, like a TV or a sofa, may just serve as distractions and excuses not to work.

The order in which these home office pieces are arranged is important. Putting them at angles that complement one another and improve efficiency is vital. The area should be well-lit, far from noise and too much human traffic to encourage greater productivity. It is ideal for the computer armoire to be placed in an area where an outlet is nearby so the wires are not stretched across the room. There are implements that one can use to manage unruly or overly long wires of office appliances. The important thing is for these wires to be arranged in such a way that they won’t look messy and pose a danger to anyone walking around the office. There are also some models of home office desks that allow for wires and cables to be neatly placed in one connecting hole.

As for decorating the room, an ideal color theme is bright, for energy to thrive in the room, but not too bright that it would distract anyone using the office. Dark colors can make people lethargic, so staying away from them is a good idea. Another idea for home office furnishings is a book shelf, but this should be filled with reference materials. To save space, a corner entertainment center can also be used in place of a book shelf as long as it is filled with work materials and not entertainment items. As with usual desks in the office, office desks for home offices should also be kept professional. As much as possible, personal trinkets and memorabilia should be kept at a minimum, less they prove too distracting. The ideal home office is one that is welcoming to the telecommuter and encourages productivity. Creating such a space can increase the benefits telecommuting affords.
