The southern part of the state of Michigan is more susceptible to tornados and storms, and Macomb Township is no exception. During such natural phenomenon, heavy rains usually occur and cause some forms of water damage to homes, businesses and even to agriculture. In the past, the township experienced up to six inches of rain over a few hours resulting to significant flooding and damage.

Flooding is most evident in parks and roads; however, heavy raining also floods basements of homes located in low areas. A flooded basement can be difficult to clean up considering its level in comparison to the higher ground level. But despite this hindrance, a homeowner should act quickly to get that water out of the basement.

Health issues that can arise are the top reasons why a homeowner should act quickly to remove water accumulating in the basement. Although water that sits in the basement for long periods can cause structural damage, health problems that a family can be exposed to are a much bigger threat. Bacteria and mold are among the things that can thrive in stagnant basement water. These microorganisms can ...
... cause serious respiratory problems and infections so do not attend to this problem if you are not properly protected.

When removing water from a flooded basement, consider safety first. If you notice or suspect that electrical wires and appliances are submerged in water, be keen on turning off the breaker that controls the basement's power supply first. This should avoid any electrical shock accidents when you come in contact with water or any wet surfaces. If you need a power source later on for electrically powered cleaning equipment, search for an alternative source or have a professional look into your basement's electrical wiring system first.

After safety, consider methods that you can follow to speed up water removal and cleaning your basement. Among the tools that you can consider using are dehumidifiers, pumps, power sprays, and fans. The only downside to using such tools is that you may need to rent or buy them. Additionally, you will need time and skills in order to learn to operate them safely.

Another quick way of handling basement flooding is hiring a professional water removal and damage restoration contractor. Your local professionals generally have the right equipment on hand, saving you from purchasing or renting them and the time needed in order to learn how to operate them. They also have a team equipped with the right skills in operating these equipment and expertise in handling water damage problems.

If you have insurance coverage for flooded basements, hiring a contractor is most likely going to be covered. However, be sure to contact your insurance provider before you hire a contractor to get a list of requirements that will be needed for your claim later on. Document the incident through photos or videos. In some instances, your water damage contractor may even file insurance claims on your behalf so you are spared from all the hassles of paper works.
