Sustainable drainage systems, which is also known as the sustainable urban drainage system is designed to reduce the impact of the new developments of surface water discharges. The main concept behind the sustainable drainage system is to provide a better and cost effective drainage system that has a low impact on the environment to channel the dirty surface water to water sources for processing. It involves collection, cleaning and discharges the surface water so that the watercourses are not polluted in any way.

One of the main drawbacks of the traditional drainage system is that it allows the flow of dirty water into the environment thereby paving the way for pollution and flooding. When the watercourses are polluted, it in turn affects the wildlife and plant habitation. The groundwater also gets contaminated due to the pollution of the watercourses, which results in a shortage of drinking water. All these led to the development of a sustainable drainage system that will cope with the problems imposed by the traditional system. It is a system that is easy to manage and uses energy such as solar energy to run them. ...
... The sustainable drainage system is very eco-friendly and also designed aesthetically to make it look neat and clean, unlike the traditional drainage system.

Sustainable drainage system is so designed that it can reduce the impact of the surface water drainage system. The main use is when water flows into the sewer and exceeds the allowable limit it may lead to overflowing. However, with a sustainable drainage system implemented by all the development sites, the problem of overflowing of the sewers will be reduced to a greater extent.

The common techniques used by sustainable drainage systems are permeable paving, storm water detention, rainwater detention, storm water infiltration and evapotranspiration. The conventional model of a drainage system was mainly concentrating the collection of the storm water and allowing it to flow into the sewer systems. When there is heavy rainfall, overflowing of the sewer system was a common sight. A sustainable drainage system considers water as an asset and by making use of the techniques of infiltration and detention of surface water, it improves the quality of the water and reduces the heating effect and creates a positive impact on the health of people living in the area.

A sustainable drainage system reduces the global urban heat island effect to a greater extent. The main reason for the heating effect has been due to the lack of vegetation, thermal properties of the urban structures and transport. Sustainable drainage systems make use of the evapotranspiration, which is the green roofs to manage the water flow. Green roofs are created in such a way that they can be retro fitted into the building based on the independent sizes.

In the traditional drainage system, the rainwater is channeled into the sewer systems. As a result of this, they are not being allowed to absorb into the ground. This results in the depletion of the groundwater level. However, a sustainable drainage system will collect the rainwater, stores and cleans it and then releases it into the watercourses. This will increase the groundwater levels and without polluting the watercourses.

The importance of a sustainable drainage system cannot be over emphasized. They provide the right way of channeling the water into the watercourses by considering water as an asset.
