Aside from providing attractive, reliable, and comfortable vehicles, car makers as of the present are also competing in developing better transmissions that they could use for their car models in the future. The primary reason for this is because most car finders aside from searching for the best auto financing deals offered by dealerships are currently looking for cars with impressive transmissions. Due to this, leading car makers such as GM, Ford, BMW, and the others are investing huge amounts on upgrading their transmission production.

However, these automobile manufacturers’ efforts were recently outrun by ZF since they were able to produce and launch the world’s first ever 9-speed automatic transmission for passenger cars. ZF has made the launch of their recent discovery in a conference dubbed as the “Transmission in Vehicles 2011.”

Upon its actual launch, ZF explained some of the details about the 9-speed automatic transmission. According to them, this new gearbox is code-named 9HP which was designed for ...
... use on cars with front-transverse driving configuration. The 9HP would be offered in two model ranges and is capable of handling an estimated torque of about 206.5 to 331.9 lb-ft. This can also be used in most all-wheel and hybrid drive applications.

Aside from this, vehicles with ZF’s 9-speed automatic transmission are more fuel-efficient compared to models that use the conventional 6-speed automatic transmission. According to ZF, the new transmission could actually improve a vehicle’s fuel consumption to as much as 16%. This is because the 9-speed automatic transmission allows the vehicle to reach a certain speed at a lower rpm therefore reducing the amount of fuel it consumes. In addition to this, the 9-speed automatic transmission also allows the driver of the vehicle to experience quicker response during gear shifts.

With this discovery, it is expected that other car makers would soon produce this type of transmission for their own vehicles. Since the 9-speed automatic transmission offers better fuel-efficiency, other vehicle manufacturers would probably create their own versions as well as new specs for this transmission to suit the configuration of some of their existing vehicle configurations. By doing this, they would also be able to attract more car finder s who want to own a vehicle with 9-speed transmission.
