Cerebral Palsy – Assisting In Day To Day Activities
The recommended activities for children with cerebral palsy include proper medical intervention coupled with physical therapy, language and speech therapy, early education involving special learning programs, occupational therapy, as well as family support services. This can help improve the day to day activities of children with cerebral palsy and allow them the opportunity to lead a more normal life. The daily activities of children with cerebral palsy is basically used as an umbrella term which is comprised of activities and related tasks that people routinely experience in their everyday living. In this regard, daily activities are also subdivided into various categories like personal care, functional mobility, and performing in domestic and community tasks.
With proper assistance, children with cerebral palsy will be able to learn how to perform these basic tasks more independently like bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, wheelchair mobility, simple housekeeping, using the telephone, cooking simple meals, and other related tasks associated with daily living. Exploring the development of daily activities among children ...
... with cerebral palsy is important if parents want to give their child a semblance of normalcy in their daily living, once they reach adulthood. The majority of children with cerebral palsy experience great difficulty in performing self care activities as well as other basic tasks usually performed for everyday living.
During the early stage, extensive assistance may be needed for personal care including bathing, grooming, dressing, and other related tasks. Even eating can sometimes be very difficult because the majority of personal care activities rely on the utilization of upper limbs. An estimated fifty percent of the population affected by cerebral palsy have weakened upper limb function and this is part of the major aspects why children with cerebral palsy experience a significant decrease in their learning ability to participate in basic daily living activities.
But with the right guidance, medical intervention, use of assistive technology, and education, children with cerebral palsy will be able to learn how to cope with their disability and understand the importance of performing their day to day activities unassisted if this is possible. Although it is a given fact that children with cerebral palsy will have a difficult chance of living a fully independent life, this is often a case to case basis and will largely depend on how severe the condition as well as on the interventions used during the early stage of the condition that is vital for training them how to function normally. Various therapies and motor skills development programs can help expedite the development of personal abilities needed for performing basic living activities. But this can only be possible if the child equally receives the attention and assistance they need for them to be able to understand the significance of learning these tasks.
Children with cerebral palsy must be given special attention and caring. There is a possibility that a child with CP will never be able to fully learn how to personally care for themselves but with due diligence and patience, proper training can still give them the opportunity to try and possibly succeed later on.
