The use of Capital letters in sentences
Capitalization of sentences is the correct use of capital letters in sentences. Capital letters are used are used differently and for different purposes in sentences. There are some simple rules that govern the use capital letters.
To begin with, the first letter of a sentence should always start with a capital letter. This can be shown by the following sentences;
a) The thief was arrested.
b) My mum returned yesterday.
Specific names of people and places should also begin with capital letters. For example, names of people such as Richard, Derrick and Brian should start with capital letters. Example in sentences;
a) John and Sarah went shopping together.
b) Sean is always seen together with Tom.
The word I and the words that include it are always capitalized. Examples in sentences are;
a) I will not come to school tomorrow.
b) I’d rather travel at night than during the day.
Names of places like countries, cities and towns should begin with capital letters. Example in sentences;
a) Canada is a wonderful ...
... country
b) When Bob grows up he would like to visit Mexico City, the capital city of Mexico and maybe work in Sydney Australia.
While writing title, be it movie titles, titles of books, or TV shows, the first and the last words should always be capitalized. If the title is composed of many words, then all the words should be capitalized except the minor words like in, of, and, for and to should not be capitalized. This can be seen in the following examples;
a) Name of movies, for example; What Happens in Vegas
b) Title of books, for example; Too Much, Too Soon
Examples in sentences;
a) The mum promised to buy me ‘The Golden Hand’ if I improve my grades.
b) Jane likes watching ‘First Sunday’, a movie by Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan.
The first letters of days of the week such as Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, and Friday should be written in capital letters. This should be done even if they are abbreviated. The months of a year should also begin with capital letters. Names of specific holidays should begin with capital letters too. However seasons should not be capitalized. Examples in sentences are;
a) Mark was born on Wednesday, October 19th, 1988.
b) During winter, every body puts on warm clothes.
c) My dad will be travelling to Liverpool on Easter Monday.
Capitalization is also very useful in writing addresses for both sender and recipients of letters. In writing addresses the name of the city, state, county, name of street, drive, avenue and lane should all begin with capital letters. Examples of addresses;
a) Stephen Denver,
Southern Hill Publishers,
40135 Ln
Beverly Hills, CA, 10200, USA
b) Jennifer Inc.
Anniversary Towers
Ground fl, 2365 Av
South Carolina
Capitalization of First letters is also applied in captions. We capitalize the first letter while naming specific valleys, mountains, lakes and rivers. Examples in sentences;
a) When I toured Africa, I saw the Usambara Mountains.
b) Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa.
For one to be a good writer he or she must know capitalization effectively. Capitalization is useful in many areas of writing. These include letter writing, the writing of internal memos, writing of essays and reports. Below is short note that summarizes all the concepts in capitalization of sentences.

When using a capital letter, the reader is able to understand the beginning of a sentence and also is able to distinguish the different meaning of what the writer intends to mean for the words that are similar but have different meaning when capitalized. Example of such words is God and god. Capitalizing is essential for a clear understanding.
