Beijing time early morning of May 31, 2011, after political struggle within FIFA turns white-hot and President of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Mohammed bin Hammam has been indefinitely suspended by FIFA's ethics committee, a formal statement on AFC official website announces that the current First Vice-President of AFC, Chinese official Zhang Jilong, will serve as Acting President of AFC.

Zhang Jilong, born in Yantai City Shandong Province China in February 1952, is the First Vice-President of AFC, Chairman of the AFC financial and market development committee, Chairman of Sports Committee of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), and executive member of OCA. He joined the army in 1969. Then he was demobilized to the National Sports Commission (NSC) in 1972 and chosen to study in English Department in Beijing International Studies University (BISU). After graduation in 1975 he returned to work with foreign affairs in the International Department of NSC.

Zhang devoted himself to promote the rightful place of Chinese Football Association (CFA) in FIFA and to expand exchanges and cooperation between Chinese ...
... football and the world. He did plenty of work with CFA colleagues to establish China's first professional soccer league. He lobbied a lot to improve China's impact and won the right to host the 2004 Asian Cup. Zhang also contributed to China's historic success of rushing into the World Cup for the first time as fulfilling China a lucky draw for qualifying with his network. Zhang was awarded the FIFA Order of Merit in August 2008. He is the first Chinese officials to obtain such an honor.

It is the first time in history that a Chinese serve as the President of AFC. For in the past ten years, Chinese football developed a meaningless diplomacy, coupled with corruption league and poor performance of the national team, it has been marginalized gradually in AFC. It is evaluated as a big chance for Chinese football that Zhang now succeeds the President of AFC and administer the High Authority of Asian football.
