A Guide To Some Of The Top Uk Car Review Websites
Buying a new car is a large financial investment, so it’s crucial to do your research and read plenty of reviews to ensure you make the right choice.
As an avid fan of the Jaguar brand, I’m always keen to find information on their models. While the ideal would be to have a sterling TV review from Top Gear or the like, there are only so many cars they can assess. It would also not be feasible to go out and test drive all of the car models you’re interested in.
What is needed is a way to easily and effectively narrow down your options and settle on two or three cars that best suit our needs, then go out and give them a test drive to see which one has the right feel.
Finding unbiased reviews of a new or used car can be tricky however. After deciding on your dream car, the next step is whittling down the feature options that the manufacturer offers. An online search of motor review websites is a great resource for honest and informative opinions.
The following guide will give you a summary of the current Top 5 most popular UK car review websites, to ...
... help you get the right information at your fingertips.
Honest John
www.honestjohn.co.uk
Honest John is a journalist with over 50 years experience in the motor industry and when not tending to his personal car enthusiast website, he writes reviews for The Daily Telegraph. The website itself is a little tricky to navigate at first with lots of information and adverts, but the reviews themselves are comprehensive and well written - seemingly free from biased commercial influence. Each review (of which there are currently around 1750) comes with lots of pictures of different car models, colours and angles. Overall, this site might at first appear a little amateur, but rest assured it offers informative and helpful car content.
What Car
www.whatcar.co.uk
What Car appears sleekly professional and is easy to navigate. It includes advice on both new and second hand models. The reviews themselves contains nicely sectioned into, such as:
What it’s like? (Summary of the cars performance, reliability and styling).
Which one should I get? (Suggestions on which engine to choose and which models to choose for best value and protection against depreciation).
What are the running costs? (Such as MPG details, tax info and insurance options).
What should I look for? (Sound advice to stop you rushing in with all heart and no head!)
The website also contains an excellent User Review section, with many featured cars receiving in excess of fifty reviews from customers who have actually bought and owned the vehicles.
Parkers
www.parkers.co.uk
The Parkers website features a user-friendly “Help me choose my car” section which is enormously useful. It allows you to specify your needs and budget to easily find models that fall within your criteria. This is particularly important for finding suitable cars that may not seem the obvious choice, or even ones you didn’t yet know about. For example, when I searched for a car that offers driving enjoyment, roomy space to transport the kids and a budget limitation of £20k, it returned a list of very well matched models, my favourite being the Jaguar XJ.
Top Gear
www.topgear.co.uk
For entertainment and writing flair, there is no better place to look for car reviews than from the people who have the ability to captivate even the most ardent left-wing Vegan environmentalists with their passion, charm and wit. It may not be the most comprehensive site with only 736 new car reviews, but they include comprehensive features on all but the most obscure car makes and models. What’s more, it’s fun to watch video clips of Jeremy or one of his minions tearing around the Top Gear test track. For these reasons, this website is definitely worth a look.
Auto Express
www.autoexpress.co.uk
This rather unassuming car review site has a nice look and feel to it, with a simple interface that is refreshingly simple to use. The car reviews are quite detailed and are also written in comprehensive essay style rather than quick lists. This makes for pleasurable reading for car enthusiasts, but not so great for those who want to gain an opinion at a glance. There is also a section at the bottom of each review for user comments, which is seemingly very lightly moderated so a good place to get the undiluted truth.
Conclusion
Whether you’re on the specific hunt for Jaguar reviews like me or are looking at other car options, the bottom line when shopping around or even clarifying your options is to take the time to research and compare suitable models, as well as to read plenty of customer feedback. This will take you a long way to finding the car that best suits your needs.
