There are at least three main reasons as to why lawn irrigation is usually done through sprinkler systems. Before proceeding to look at those, we may mention that lawn irrigation is all about supplying lawn grasses with water artificially. The natural way to water such grasses (as indeed all plants) would be by exposing them to natural precipitation, also known as rain. But there are many places where that is not possible. There are, for instance, many places where the amount of rainfall received is too small to ensure optimal growth for the grasses on the lawns. There are even more places where, in spite of the total level of rainfall received being adequate for the growth of the grasses, the rainfall still turns out to be too poorly distributed, with long dry spells. In such places, it is usually necessary to put in place some sort of lawn irrigation, especially if you are keen on having a truly lush lawn.

It emerges that there are several irrigation methods designed for use in a variety of settings. There is, for instance, drip irrigation, where slight-perforated water-bearing pipes are laid underneath the plots of ...
... land where plants are grown. The idea is to release the water in the pipes slowly, through the perforations, providing the growing plants grown on the plots with water throughout. We also have the method termed as ‘can irrigation’ where water is simply poured onto the growing plants; that being water which eventually seeps to the soil, from where it is taken up by the plant roots. However, out of all these and several other irrigation methods we haven’t mentioned, lawn owners seem to prefer irrigating the grasses on the lawns through sprinkler systems. We are trying to understand why that is the case.

It turns out, as we noted earlier, that there are at least three main reasons as to why lawn irrigation is usually done through such sprinkler systems:

1. Sprinkler irrigation simulates natural precipitation. This is important, against a background where the grasses planted in lawns are typically too sensitive to withstand the physical assault associated with, for instance, can irrigation (where water is directly poured on top of plants). Do this to lawn grasses, and chances are that they won’t grow optimally. Sprinklers on the other hand, supply water to the grasses in a fine spray, akin to light rainfall – which is exactly what the lawn grasses need for their optimal growth.
2. Lawn care experts and irrigation consultants recommend sprinkler irrigation to lawn owners. There are people who opt to irrigate their lawn grasses using sprinkler systems not because they prefer doing so at a personal level, but because they are advised to do so by the respective consultants. Of course, irrigation and lawn care consultants recommend sprinkler irrigation for lawn grasses knowing that it is the best method to irrigate plants such as grass.

3. Lawns have always been watered through sprinkler systems. We also have folks who opt to water their lawn grasses using sprinkler systems because ‘that is how things have always been done.’ They may not understand the reasoning behind the choice, but they nonetheless opt to water their lawn grasses that way, in keeping with convention.
