A rug is a thing of beauty and oriental rugs add that charm to any room that you put it in. But maintaining your rugs is also important to extend their life and keep them in good condition. Oriental rugs cleaning can be undertaken once a year and can be done by a professional. Cleaning these rugs at home is generally not recommended due to the delicate nature of the rugs. The color of the fiber used, the natural oils present in the fiber and the weaving techniques can be permanently damaged if wool rugs are washed with very harsh detergents.

When to Clean Wool Rugs

A rug can be cleaned once a year if it is in an area that does not see much traffic. Rugs that are placed in high traffic areas must be cleaned twice a year. The surest way to know if your rug is ready for a cleaning is by rubbing your hand against it for about ten seconds and if they come out dirty or if you have dusting flying up, it is definitely time for a cleaning. You have two choices when it comes to oriental rugs cleaning, do it yourself or get a professional to do it.

Professional Rug Cleaning Services

A professional ...
... cleaning service is recommended when it comes to cleaning your oriental and antique rugs. An experienced person is aware of the care that a rug needs when it is being cleaned. This is especially true if you can take your rug back to the dealer who sold it to you. Most of them also offer cleaning services and are accountable even if something goes wrong during the cleaning process. Oriental rugs should be checked for damage before being cleaned because the cleaning process can aggravate the situation and permanently damage the rug.

Cleaning Rugs at Home

If you cannot afford professional rug cleaning services twice a year or if your rug is made from polyester mixed fibers, cleaning at home by yourself is an option. Dust your rug and take out as much of it as possible. Wash the rug and clean it with a mild detergent. Wash out the soap and lay flat to dry in a place where direct sunlight will not fall on it. Make sure it is completely dry before putting it back in its place because moisture can cause undeniable damage to a rug.
