After months of record breaking heat and drought, Perth’s biggest dam is just 9 per cent full, its lowest ever. With Perth recording the hottest March on record, fears of a water shortage are evident. The water Corporation has claimed that the situation is “dire”.
Premier, Colin Barnett, has stated that it is inevitable that water in West Australia’s far north will eventually be channelled to the south. As the opposition leader in 2005, Mr Barnett’s commitment to carrying water from the north to Perth was said to be his downfall.
A spokesman for the Water Corporation has confirmed that Perth is approaching the stage where they cannot rely on the dams for sufficient water to cater to the needs of the population. According to the spokesman, there is only so long you can go with almost no rainfall without having to have some cutbacks. There is a 76 billion litre shortfall that needs to be met by water flow into the dams or by reductions in consumption.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology statistician, John Relf, “The Previous driest two month period for February-March in Perth was 0.8mm back in ...
... 1877 and in 1973. Therefore this is the driest March in over 130 years. It was also the sunniest March in more than 110 years, with 11 hours of sunshine a day compared to the average 9.5 hours, and in the last three months, Perth also had its hottest nights on record.
Neither the Water Corporation nor the State Government has acknowledged the massive water savings by householders that substitute water thirsty lawns with artificial turf. Still there is no mention of the potential savings. In fact, some Local Government Authorities are actively against the use of synthetic turf in their jurisdiction. Once Local Authority in particular is issuing notices to residents to remove their synthetic turf from the Council verge.
