This objective discusses the strategy for global catalog server placement. The existing comptia exams environment will help you in formulating the overall design of Active Directory, including forests, domains, and trust relationships. It will also guide you in placement of domain controllers, global catalog servers, and operations masters, as well as the configuration of the sites and site links.
Global catalog servers are Active Directory domain controllers that have been given the added functionality of holding a copy of the global catalog database. The very first domain controller installed into the root domain of the forest is always given the role of global catalog server. However, subsequent domain controllers will not automatically be designated with this role and you will need to configure them manually.
There are certain situations where enabling universal group membership caching makes more sense than adding a global catalog server. If you have a small branch office that contains a domain controller for a small domain, and it is connected to the rest of the corporate ...
... network by a WAN link with little available bandwidth, that is an ideal situation for caching universal group memberships. In doing so, authentication and query traffic will take place locally, and replication traffic will be minimized since there will not be a large global catalog to replicate.
You have a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory network with seven global catalog servers. One of the Windows 2000 global catalog servers, 2KGC5, has failed, and you install a new server named GC8 to replace 2KGC5. You want to bring 2KGC5 ccna exam back online, but you do not want it to be a global catalog server or a domain controller. You want to install Windows Server 2003, and you want to rename the server because your naming strategy requires member servers to be named differently from domain controllers. Which action should you take?
A.Clear the Global Catalog check box on the NTDS Settings object within 2KGC5.
B.Upgrade the server using the Windows Server 2003 WINNT32 command, selecting all defaults.
C.Back up the data from the server, format the drive, and install Windows Server 2003 as a new server with a new name, making the server a member of the
domain. Restore the data back to the server.
D.Use the domain controller rename tool. Demote the domain controller to a member server using Dcpromo.ex
Correct Answers: C
A.Incorrect: While this will remove the global catalog services, it will not rename the server or upgrade it, nor will it remove Active Directory and the global catalog services.
B.Incorrect: The upgrade process will not remove the domain controller or global catalog services from 2KGC5, nor will it rename the server.
C.Correct: This option will meet all of the objectives of bringing the server online as a member server running Windows Server 2003.
D.Incorrect: You cannot use the domain controller rename tool unless the domain mcse exam controller is running Windows Server 2003, and the domain is at the Windows Server 2003 functional level. After Dcpromo.exe removes Active Directory, the server will be a member server of the domain.
