How To Care For Your Football Boots
Football boots do not come cheap and they are an investment you should consider taking great care of for prolonged use. They are the most important sports gear for any footballer. Care and maintenance of boots keep them in good shape and in proper working order. There are several basic steps for looking after your football boots.
Make it a habit to always loosen the laces before taking the shoes off. Forcing them off your feet will damage the supportive heel structure, changing its original shape.
Use a stiff brush to remove mud. Stamping the boots together, hitting them against a wall or the floor will break loose the studs and screwings. You can use a damp cloth to wipe clean the surface of the boots to remove the excess mud and dirt.
Let your boots dry naturally without using induced heat. The boots become stiff, adhesives wear off and soleplates warp due to excessive heat.
If there are traces of mud in tiny grooves, you can use a toothbrush to clear them.
Use newspapers to stuff your shoes with to maintain their shape.
If the studs are screw-ins, then grease them after drying. This ...
... will prevent rusting and become much easier to clean the soles.
Leather boots can be polished and if you prefer, use a pH balanced cleaner that is healthy for the leather.
After polishing leave it for a period of 24 hours. The boot can be protected by a Dubbin or leather oil to keep it waterproof and to retain the supple leather. Then buff it with a dry cloth. But do not use this method for synthetic boots as the protective patina on them will be removed. Look for a special synthetic cleaner that is not too harsh for the boots.
Add a little bit of lubricant to the stud threads when you remove or change the studs. But not too much as it can prevent the stud from fitting properly and minimize friction.
Keep your boots on a boot rack rather than stuffing them away somewhere in a bag.
Caring for your football boots and their proper maintenance are important to get the best performance out of them. It will save you the expense and trouble of buying new shoes frequently and give you maximum performance. Remind yourself to clean and store away your boots properly after every game. Some of the best football boots which come from the most popular footgear manufacturers are worth the effort and the time, to preserve for longer use.
