This spring several articles and warnings have been circulating regarding the safety of our drugs - both name branded prescription, generic, and over the counter supplements. "The safety of America’s food and medical products is under serious challenge," FDA’s principal deputy commissioner said. The FDA is responsible for overseeing the safety and manufacturing quality of food, drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics. However, it’s difficult to keep up with this work given the huge jump in manufacturing both here and, sadly, overseas.

Years ago, the FDA had a better handle on ensuring the safety of these products because most were made in the United States. Today, the biggest concern for this agency is that most of these products are made overseas outside of the FDA’s strict regulations. Forty percent of drugs consumed in the United States are imported, while eighty percent of the ingredients used in U.S. drugs and supplements come from other countries. The FDA’s difficulty in monitoring imports is also leading to more counterfeit and adulterated products entering the U.S., and faultier labeling and packaging.

... warning issued by the FDA in March states that it had found almost 300 "fraudulent products" in the dietary supplement area last year alone. Some of these products contained hidden prescription ingredients at levels much higher than those found in an approved drug products, and some were non-approved compounds altogether such as synthetic steroids. On an optimistic note, however, the FDA does have a "global strategy and action plan." The FDA will partner with its foreign counterparts to create a global coalition of regulators. It will boost intelligence gathering and the agency will encourage consumers and the private sector to help in its efforts. The Buy American Pledge is such an important movement right now not only for the obvious reasons of helping our U.S. economy, beginning from the local sector up, but also for our health.
