Our discussion starts at the point where you have just made the decision to undertake lawn care on your own/in-house, as opposed to contracting the same to one of the lawn service firms. Your decision to keep lawn care in-house means that you will have to recruit staff for task, especially if it is those reasonably large organizational lawns we are looking at. And, naturally, it is not just any sort of lawn care staff you are keen on getting, but specifically the ‘best possible lawn maintenance staff you can get,’ if the work is to be done properly. That is where you are likely to find relief in the fact that there are at least four ways in which you can get decent lawn maintenance staff. It is those that we are going to be exploring here –and what exactly goes on in each approach. And, without further ado, the four ways in which you can get good staff for lawn care would include:

1. By advertising the positions and conducting direct interviews: of course, this is a considerably expensive and involving approach. When you think of costs, you should not only think of the amount for which you pay to get advertising ...
... space (which may be more or less negligible), but also the cost of the time you will have to spend in short-listing and then interviewing. But on the upside, this is one approach which allows you to tap into a wide talent pool, and get the best possible lawn care staff available.

2. By getting in touch with a labor bureau: you find these bureaus in many parts of the world, where people interested in various jobs submit their resumes into databases. Some of the bureaus are owned by individuals/companies and, as such, operated along commercial lines. Others are government-owned employment bureaus. The good thing with this approach is in the fact that the folks behind the bureau normally short-list and partially interview the potential candidates for you, so that they only give you people who are likely to be ‘good fits’ for your job, from whom you can make the final selection. This makes a huge difference, in terms of the amount of time you have to spend on the lawn maintenance staff recruitment. The problem is in the fact that the pre-selection of staff may lead to a situation where potentially good workers are weeded out. This is a possibility, given the fact that what you may consider essential strengths may turn out to be what the bureau people actually consider to be a weaknesses, in potential workers!

3. By getting recommendations from lawn service firms: these, to the extent that you can form deep informal ties with them, may be able to link you up with their former employees who are keen on direct employment. But more often than not, the lawn service firms express an interest in being given the project, rather than making potential lawn maintenance employee recommendations.

4. By getting in touch with a temp bureau: this is precisely what you need to do, if the lawn care staff you need will probably on be engaged on a short-term, part-time basis. The temp bureaus, where they happen to be in operation, will tend to hook you up with people looking for precisely such short-term/part time positions in areas like lawn care.
