Usc Trojans Thrilling Victory In 1975 Rose Bowl Game

The Rose Bowl is revered as one of the biggest games each season in College Football. Many College Football fans are very familiar with the game today, as the game often features two of the top BCS teams squaring off to prove that they are among the best teams in the nation. In 1975 the BCS was far from formulated and the game was not always used as a game that featured the very best teams in the league. While there were often games played that would help to decide the National Champions, it was not necessarily part of the policy of the NCAA to have a championship game at that time.
In 1975 the Rose Bowl was played between two familiar foes. The USC Trojans and the Ohio State Buckeyes squared off in the Rose Bowl for two years consecutively leading up to 1975. The games that were played in previous years were finished in opposite matters. In one year the Trojans stomped the Buckeyes and looked like the far superior team. In another year the Buckeyes put a hurt on the Trojans and managed to score more than 40 points to put out USC. This year would be a great rubber match, giving the teams a chance to show which was more ...
... dominant.
The game would include the Heisman Trophy player that every college football fan remembers, Archie Griffin. Griffin is a legend as he managed to win the Heisman Trophy on consecutive years.
This game would go down to be remembered as one of the most exciting games in the history of the Rose Bowl. These teams played a game that would go down to the wire before it was ultimately decided. The Trojans entered they game as the 5th ranked team in the nation and the Buckeyes were the 3rd ranked team in the nation.
The first half was a solid battle, with the USC Trojans opening up the scoring in the 1st quarter. The Trojans managed to go up 3-0 with a 30 yard kick from Limahelu. This would be the only score of the 1st quarter as the Buckeyes were unable to get on the board in the first.
The Buckeyes did manage to respond in the 2nd quarter as Champ Henson ran the ball in for a 2 yard score. This would give the Buckeyes the advantage entering into the half. The PAT was good and the Buckeyes would hold a 7-3 lead entering halftime.
The third quarter was intense, but neither team was able to get things going offensively. The defense of both teams really stepped up and neither team put any points on the board in the 3rd quarter. The score was just 7-3 entering the 4th. This was really surprising after the teams put tons of points on the board in their previous two matchups.
The 4th quarter was exciting and USC opened it up with a 9 yard touchdown. The Trojans grabbed the lead with the touchdown before the Buckeyes came marching back. The Buckeyes had back to back scores including a 3 yard touchdown run and a 32 yard field goal to hold a 7 point lead. It looked like the Trojans would need a miracle to take the game.
The Trojans responded in the end of the forth as Haden threw a 38 yard touchdown. The Trojans decided to go for 2 and the win. Haden hit Shelton Diggs to take the lead and the Trojans would win the game 18-17 on a two-point conversion.
