Large quantity of water is supplied through huge large pipes to various residential and industrial areas. This water comes into use for various domestic and commercial purposes. It is obtained from various rivers but it is not clean enough to directly use for drinking or medical purposes and thus it has to go through a water treatmentprocess through which it becomes purified enough in an acceptable form. This water treatment process is targeted towards removing the harmful contaminants from the water to make it fir for various desired uses. This is done through involvement of huge water treatment plants that are equipped with right kind of purifying devices and machines for the purpose. The devices to be used for purifying the water is chosen as per the estimated quantity of contaminants that water may contain. The impurities from the water are removed either through solid separation by settling or filtering or by chemical processes like disinfection or coagulation.
One of the popular materials that are used in the water purifying process is chlorine. Chlorination is ...
... one of the chemical processes in which chlorine is used to kill the impurities present in the water. Chlorine is added to the water by means of various chlorination devices that come in the form of cylinders and floor or wall mounted chlorinators. These devices are incorporated with a filter, pressure gauge, vacuum regulator, flow meter, pressure control valve and an injector. The filter purifies the water and injector inserts the vacuum that opens the check valve that reaches vacuum regulator through differential regulator. All these internal instruments ensure proper insertion and mixing of chlorine with the water.
The cylinder-mounted chlorinators are the gas chlorinators and are quite easy to use and maintain. These chlorinators come in different sizes of cylinders that differ in mounting arrangements. The choice of a gas chlorinator depends upon the flow rate of water to be treated, which could be in gallons per minute or as per the demand of water that is measured in parts per million. ‘Pound per day’ is used to calculate the feed rate of the chlorinator. In addition, the amount of chlorine to be inserted in water is also to be decided as per the contamination level or algae, bacteria, or hydrogen sulfide present in the water. Water temperature, agitation, and aeration are also to be considered while deciding the quantity of chlorine to be mixed in the water.
