Cotton Curtains - Simple And Fashionable
There are many different fabrics and styles to choose from when you are shopping for curtains, but some are better than others. Cotton in particular is an ideal choice for curtains for almost any room.
A particularly crisp and vibrant appearance to your curtains may be best served with man-made fibres. But for almost every other need, cotton is a better choice. Cotton curtains are available in a vast array of colours and prints too, and give a soft and gentle finish to your rooms. They have many benefits when compared to man-made fibres.
Cotton is very easy to care for. It washes and dries easily, and may be washed repeatedly as needed. Once dried, your curtains can be ironed and rehung, looking as good as they ever did. Many man-made fibres on the other hand are very sensitive to heat. This means that if they become wrinkled they are harder to fix, as ironing them may actually cause them to melt. Cotton is more resistant to heat and can comfortably be ironed, restoring your cotton curtains to their most tidy appearance.
The softer feel of cotton is particularly suited to windows that are frequently opened, ...
... as they can blow gently in the breeze. Man-made fibres tend to be more stiff and unforgiving. The softness of cotton makes them look more casual too, framing the window with a less hard edge.
Cotton has the ability to insulate far better than man-made fabrics can do. This means that your cotton curtains can help to keep a house cool in summer by keeping out the bright afternoon sunlight, or can insulate windows from the cold in the winter. This makes them an ideal choice, whereas man-made curtains are not so well suited for heat insulation.
Cotton can be produced in a natural, highly unrefined state. In this form is it soft, and once washed well enough that the natural oils are removed it is absorbent and easy to care for. Natural cotton does not require bleaching, instead having a warm cream colour. This avoids the need for the use of chemicals that can potentially cause pollution to the environment-in particular to our waterways. Natural cotton curtains are simple, yet beautiful.
Dying cotton is a simple process, and dying can be done either before weaving-allowing patterns to be woven into the fabric-or can be printed onto the fabric after, giving rise to attractive and fashionable patterns, akin to those on man-made cloth.
From a safety point of view, cotton is always the best choice for curtains. Whilst both cotton and man-made fibres will burn, man-made fibres tend to melt and drip, and will stick to objects that they come into contact with, if they catch fire. This poses a greater hazard in a house fire, and the melted, hot curtain can stick to skin. Cotton, especially natural cotton that has not been chemically treated, is less flammable.
There are cotton curtains to suit any season and any room in the house-the perfect choice for finishing your room.
This is well written informative article about linen fabrics. Explained well is the point that linen fabrics are incorrectly applied to many woven fabrics when they use a linen weave.
