Many people look back to the days of boxing in the 1950s and remember the sport being at its best at that time. There were several boxers that became legends in that era from coming up with performances that many other people did not think were possible. One of the boxers that is remembered with great affection is the great Rocky Marciano.

Marciano was perfect for his entire career and was known as one of the greatest fighters of all time. He would take on another great fighter named Archie Moore on the 21st of September, 1955. These two fighters were both out to prove that they were the greatest fighters in the world. While Marciano was perfect in his 48 fights going into the match, he did not have nearly the professional experience that Moore did going into the fight. Over the course of his career, Moore fought well over 200 fights. He won 185 times and lost 23 times. In his 185 victories he managed to win 131 of the fights by way of knockout. He is actually the record holder for most knockouts in a career and was known as one of the greatest punchers of all time.

With so many accolades, this fight was highly ...
... anticipated. Not only was this a fight between two great boxers, but it was also a fight between two men representing their respective communities. Marciano was an Italian American from Brockton, Massachusetts and Moore was an African American from Benoit, Mississippi.

Marciano was the current champion at the time of this fight and he would be out to defend his title as the best fighter in the world. While the fight was originally scheduled for the 20th of September, it was necessary to postpone the match because of a hurricane that was approaching. Fortunately, the hurricane did not do the damage that was warned of and the fighters were able to square off the next day in the Bronx.

Early on it appeared that Moore would have Rocky’s number. Moore was coming out with some tough punches and was displaying the power that everyone talked about. Marciano was struggling to respond the way that most people thought he would. Part way through the second round Moore made his first big statement. He managed to knock Marciano down to the ground. Marciano was not used to hitting the ground and the crowd eagerly waited in anticipation to see if Marciano would get back up. Marciano managed to get back up after a 4 count.

Most people felt that Moore was on his way to putting away Marciano, but Marciano was a champion and he was not finished. He came back strong and managed to take control of the fight. Marciano was fighting as if this was going to be the last fight of his career. He came out strong in the 9th round and managed to put away Moore with a knockout.

This actually would be the last fight of Marciano’s career. This was the last time that he would defend his belt as he officially retired on the 27th of April in 1956.
