In America it is known as the slot machine, in Canada it is known as the poker machine and in the United Kingdom it is known as the fruit machine. It is a gambling machine usually found in casinos. The slot machine has three or more reels which spin when a button is pressed.

The nick-name of fruit machines is one armed bandit. It is so called because when it was introduced it had a lever on the side which has now been replaced with a button and now as then could make anyone playing the game penniless. This legacy is still kept in many of the modern machines.

Slot machines have a currency detector within it to check the coins inserted by the player to play the game. The machine pays the player on the basis of patterns or symbols visible in the front of the machine. Modern technology like the computer has brought in many changes in these machines.

Seventy percent of a casinos income comes from the fruit machines as they are very popular. It is the most played game in any casino all over the world. Research carried out found that most of the profit came from these machines in casinos worldwide due to problem ...
... gamblers. Problem gamblers are people that have an impulsive control desire.

The first of these machines came in the year 1887. Charles Fey of the United States invented these machines. Poker was a very popular card game among the players but due to the introduction of the fruit machine which was cheaper, quicker to play and had better chances of winning for the individual, the fruit machine soon became as popular as poker.

Charles Fey made a machine which consisted of three reels spinning and five symbols. The symbols used were spades, hearts, horseshoes, liberty bells and diamonds. These machines invented by Charles Fey were known as, Liberty Bell during those days.

Charles Fey’s Liberty Bell was, for its time, a complex gambling machine that decreased the possible win percentage among the players making it hugely popular in the bars, cigar shops, salon, brothels and barber stores. It was the first mechanical gaming device and with evolution of technology soon others were introduced.

In 1963 an electromechanical machine was invented by Bally and was known as the money honey. The difference between these fruit machines and other machines were bottomless hoppers and money would come out automatically up to the amount of five hundred coins.
