England Victorious At Home In 1966 World Cup
Soccer has become the biggest sport in the world over time. There are countries all over the world that play almost no other sport outside of soccer. It has become such a popular sport because it is accessible to people of all social classes and economic levels. With the popularity of the sport being so great, it is clear why the World Cup has become the most popular event in the world. There have even been times when countries set aside their political problems with other countries to allow the event to go on.
The World Cup in 1966 was held in England. The event took place from the 11th of July until the 30th of July. There were 8 different venues that held games in 7 different host cities. England was always a contender for the World Cup, but teams seem to play even better when they are in their home country. England was certainly excited and expected to walk away from the event with a victory.
The event was separated into 3 groups in order to decide which teams would qualify for the actual tournament. The teams in group one included Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. The teams in group two were England, ...
... Italy, Portugal and West Germany. The teams in group three were France, Hungary, Switzerland and the Soviet Union. The last group featured Bulgaria, North Korea, Mexico and Spain.
The teams that would ultimately qualify for the tournament were England, Argentina, Portugal, North Korea, West Germany, Uruguay, the Soviet Union and Hungary.
In the top of the bracket England and Argentina played in game one. England was very strong defensively and managed to squeak out a goal to win the game by a score of 1-0. The other teams in the top part of the bracket were Portugal and North Korea. They had a game that did not feature much defense, but it was very exciting and finished with 8 goals. In the end Portugal managed to score 5 goals to win 5-3. This was the highest scoring game of the tournament.
The bottom half of the bracket featured West Germany and Uruguay and also a second game between the Soviet Union and Hungary. The first game was dominated by West Germany on the offensive and defensive sides of the game. They had a shutout and managed to put 4 goals in the net to win. The Soviet Union and Hungary had a close game, but the Soviet Union walked away with a 2-1 victory.
The second round featured games between England and Portugal and West Germany against the Soviet Union. England was bolstered by the home crowd and managed to take home a solid 2-1 victory in the game over Portugal. West Germany and the Soviet Union had a close battle, and in the end West Germany prevailed with a 2-1 victory.
In the final round England took out West Germany to become the World Cup Champions. The final score of the game was 4-2.
