Many of the race horses that are names of legend came from the times of the early to mid 1900's. One of the great races horses from that time is known as Phar Lap. Phar Lap is a name that is derived from the Zhuang language that is used to describe lightning. The word is also used in the Thai language and can literally be translated to sky flash.

Phar Lap had a great name as it was, but many people gave the horse other nicknames because of its greatness while racing. Many people gave the horse names such as Wonder Horse, Bobby, Big Red, and Red Terror. Big Red is a particularly memorable name as there were two other great horses that were known as Big Red: Man O' War and Secretariat.

Phar Lap was foaled in 1926 on the South Island of New Zealand in a place called Seadown. Phar Lap definitely had a rich bloodline as many of the other horses that he was a brother to went on to have racing careers. Some of them even managed to win races in their career. Phar Lap was far and away the most famous of the horses in his family.

... the horse thought he was getting a great deal on the colt, but the horse was ugly and had an odd gait. The man was named David J. Davis and he was very angry with the deal that had been made. Harry Telford trained the horse for free, only wanting a chance to take two-thirds of any money earned by the horse on the race track. It turned out that this would be a great deal for him as this horse was destined to win a lot of races on the track.

Throughout the course of his career the horse would go 37-3-2. The horse had a bunch of notable wins, coming from 1929 to 1932. The notable wins coming from 1929 included the AJC Derby and the Victoria Derby. While these were great wins, the horse was just getting started.

1930 would be the best year of the horse's career. Phar Lap managed to take home the victory at the Linlithgow Stakes, Futurity Stakes, Melbourne Cup, Chipping Norton Stakes, Cox Plate and Melbourne Stakes in that year.

The following year he would win again at Cox Plate and Melbourne Stakes and he also brought home a victory at the Underwood Stakes. The last major win of his career came in 1932 at the Agua Caliente Handicap.

Phar Lap was named the 22nd best horse of the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century. He was inducted in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame and the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. In 1983 there was a move made about him called Phar Lap: Heart of a Nation. This horse will be remembered as one of the all-time great horses after having a tremendous amount of success over the course of his career.
