1973 Al Cy Young Award Winner Jim Palmer Was A Mlb Legend

Jim Palmer was a pitcher that had a career that may never be matched again in sports today. While many of the athletes in the sports world today seem to shift from team to team over the course of their career, Palmer pitched for the Baltimore Orioles for the entirety of his 20 year professional baseball career.
Palmer was born in New York and was adopted by Moe and Polly Wiesen. Moe passed away when Jim was still very young and the family moved to California. In California Polly remarried a man named Max Palmer. This is where Jim got his last name.
Jim was a spectacular athlete in his high school days and decided to forego college and signed a contract to play in the minor leagues when he was just 18 years old.
Palmer was not just a good pitcher, but he was probably the best pitcher in the history of the Baltimore organization. He made his Major League debut in 1965 and continued playing for the Orioles until 1984.
Palmer was known for a delivery that included a high leg-kick. Palmer won his first game ever while pitching against the Yankees. In the game he actually hit a homerun. While many people ...
... might have thought that this was a sign of things to come, Palmer would actually only hit 2 more homers over the course of his professional career. His rookie season successful, but it was not spectacular. He finished the season with a 5-4 record.
While Palmer had opportunities to pitch in 1965, he still had not cracked the starting rotation. He began pitching in the rotation in 1966 and would be a fixture in the rotation in three different decades.
Palmer would win the first World Series Championship of his career in 1966. Frank Robinson was a huge part of that team, winning the triple crown and MVP awards while leading the league in homeruns, RBI's and batting average.
While Palmer was a solid pitcher in the 1960's and even threw a no-hitter in 1969, it was not until the 70's that he really broke out. He managed to make an all-star team for the first time in 1970. This all-star appearance would be his first of 6 appearances that he would earn during the 1970's.
He was not just an all-star caliber pitcher in the 1970's, but he was also arguably the best pitcher in the game. He won the Cy Young Award in 1973, 1975 and 1976.
He would win more World Series Championships along the way as well. His second championship came in 1970 and then won his last championship in 1983. This meant that he would be the winner of a World Series in three different decades.
He finished with 268 wins and a 2.86 ERA over the course of his career. With those excellent statistics and 3 Cy Young awards he was a great candidate for the Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1990, receiving 92.6 percent of voters' approval on the first ballot.
