Joe Louis and Max Schmeling make up much of the rich history of boxing that we have heard about through the years. Both of these fighters were among the best of their time and each time that they got together to fight it attracted the attention of the world.

There first fight was a hard-fought battle that ended in a knockout in favor of Schmeling. This was extremely surprising as Joe Louis had never lose a fight by way of knockout before and he would never lose another fight in his career in this fashion.

After the fight Schmeling wanted a shot at fighting against James Braddock for the heavyweight championship. The fight was not possible and ultimately Louis ended up getting the chance to fight Braddock for the championship. Louis won the fight and was named the world champion. Because Louis lost the previous fight between him and Schmeling he refused to accept that he was the world champion until he beat Schmeling.

This second fight between these two fighters was every bit as exciting as the first fight. Not only was the fight exciting, but it was thrown in the middle of political battles and depression. ...
... These fighters rose above the political pressures to fight each other.

Many people were pressuring Joe Louis telling him that they needed him to beat Germany for him as his opponent was a German. While Schmeling was a German, he was not on board for the Nazi ideas that Germany had embraced. He had a Jewish trainer and refused awards from the dictator, Adolf Hitler. Many speculated that Schmeling was even considering declaring American citizenship.

The fight took place in Yankee stadium and had more than 70 thousand people in attendance for the fight.

Schmeling used the same strategy that he employed in his previous fight, but Louis came out with a different idea as to how things should go. The last fight Louis was beaten in the late rounds and he did not want to allow the fight to go that long. He had the idea that he would try to win the fight within three rounds. Rumors were swirling that he even thought he could finish the fight in the first round.

Louis certainly came out firing and began to dominate Schmeling with combination after combination. The fight was stopped, but the stop only helped Schmeling a bit, as Louis was ready to come out firing again.

Almost immediately after resuming the fight Louis had Schemling on the ground with a right hook to his face. Schmeling got up and Louis continued the beating of Schmeling. Schmeling fell again and his defense began to weaken even more. Schmeling was knocked to the ground again with another series of lethal blows that caused his trainer to throw in the towel. The fight was declared over by Donovan after Schmeling was on the ground for 8 seconds and the trainer of Schmeling came into the ring.

Louis threw 41 punches in the fight and connected with 31 of them. Meanwhile, Schmeling threw just 2 punches during the fight.
