John Newcombe, Evonne Goolagong Cawley Capture 1971 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament
The tournament in 1971 featured 7 different branches of play. These branches included the Men's singles tournament, Women's singles tournament, Men's doubles tournament, Women's doubles tournament, Mixed doubles tournament, Boys' singles tournament and Girls' singles tournament.
The truth is that not all of these branches of play are viewed as being as prestigious as the rest. The biggest tournaments are the Men's singles tournament followed by the Women's singles tournament.
The Men's singles tournament came down to John Newcombe and Stan Smith fighting for the grand slam title. Newcombe already had 3 grand slams and was looking for another. Newcombe started off strong in winning the first set, but started to slip in the next two sets. After losing the next two sets Newcombe desperately needed to come back in the 4th set with a victory. He managed to pull out a close 6-4 victory in the set, forcing the game to a 5th set. The 5th set was another close set and Smith did not look like he was ready to let Newcombe take back the momentum. However, Newcombe did manage to win the 5th set 6-4 and won his 4th career grand ...

The Women's singles tournament came down to Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Margaret Court. Margaret Court was a true legend and was particularly good in her career when playing at Wimbledon. She seemed poised to take another Wimbledon singles title home in 1971. Evonne Goolagong Cawley was not ready to throw in the towel however, and she came out strong in the first set. Evonne Goolagong Cawley managed to win the first set by a score of 6-4 and put Margaret Court to the brink of elimination.
Court was unable to respond in the 2nd set and Evonne Goolagong Cawley played even better. Evonne Goolagong Cawley ultimately won the set 6-1 and took home her 2nd career grand slam title.
In the doubles tournaments there were a number of big names that ended up in the finals of the tournaments. Roy Emerson and Rod Laver teamed up for the Men's doubles tournament and made their way to the finals of the tournament to play against Arthur Ashe and Dennis Ralston. The game was a bit of a marathon, but in the end Emerson and Laver managed to pull out the victory.
The Women's doubles tournament featured a team that had the top players from the Women's singles tournament. Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Margaret Court were teammates that played against Rosemary Casals and Billie Jean King. While Court and Goolagong Cawley were more successful in the singles tournament, they could not pull out a victory in this one.
Robert Kreiss won the Boys' singles tournament and Marina Kroshina won the Girls' singles tournament.
