The 1972 Stanley Cup Playoffs featured the top eight teams from the season in a tournament to determine the best team in the National Hockey League.

The teams that qualified for the playoffs from the East Division were the Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Boston Bruins had the top record in the league with a 54-13-11 record. The Rangers were 48-17-13, the Canadiens were 46-16-16 and the Maple Leafs were 33-31-14 on the year.

The teams representing the West Division were the Chicago Black Hawks, Minnesota North Stars, St. Louis Blues and Pittsburgh Penguins. The Blackhawks led the way with a 46-17-15 record on the season. The North Stars had a 37-29-12 record, the Blues had a 28-39-11 record and the Penguins finished with a 26-38-14 record on the year.

The brackets for the playoffs had an alignment where the winner of one grouping of East Division teams would play against the winner of a grouping of West Division teams. The opposite side of the bracket had the same format. With this format it was possible for two teams from the same division to square off in ...
... the Stanley Cup Finals. This was an ideal situation for this season because it was clear that the East Division was far superior to the West Division.

The Boston Bruins and the Maple Leafs played in the first round of the playoffs. The Bruins were the far superior team and managed to walk out of the series with the victory in just 5 games.

The West Division matchup between the Minnesota North Stars and the St. Louis Blues were a classic 7 game series. The series went to its limits, and the St. Louis Blues managed to come out on top when all was said and done.

On the other side of the Bracket the Blackhawks and the Penguins played in the West Division matchup. The Blackhawks dominated the Penguins and won the series in a 4 game sweep.

The East Division matchup on that side of the bracket featured the Rangers and Canadiens. This game was much tighter, going to 6 games. The Rangers won the series 4 games to 2.

The Bruins would take on the Blues in the Semi-finals in a game between teams from each division. The East Division showed how much better they were than the West in this round as the Bruins dominated the series and won in 4 games.

The Rangers furthered the point of the East Division dominance as they swept the Blackhawks in 4 games as well. This meant that the Bruins and Rangers would square off in the Stanley Cup Finals.

This series immediately jumped out in favor of the Bruins as they managed to take the first two games of the series 6-5 and 2-1 to take a 2-0 lead. The Rangers responded with an impressive 5-2 victory over the Bruins to bring the series to 2-1.

The Bruins won the next game to go up 3-1 and put the Rangers to the brink of elimination. The Rangers were not ready to go and won a game before ultimately facing defeat at the hands of the Bruins on May 11th by a score of 3-0. The Bruins were Stanley Cup Champions.
