The 1972 NBA playoffs followed many of the same teams as the previous season, but there would be a different outcome from the 1971 playoffs. The teams that qualified for the playoffs that season were Los Angeles, Chicago, Golden State, Milwaukee, Boston, Atlanta, Baltimore and New York.

While the Celtics fell from glory the previous season, they seemed poised to make a comeback in the 1972 season. The Knicks were hungry for success and the Lakers were winless in the NBA Finals since coming from Minneapolis.

The top seeded team in the Western Conference was the Lakers. They finished the regular season in impressive fashion as they won 69 games in the regular season. The 69-13 record that the Lakers achieved would be the best record for more than 20 years until the Chicago Bulls managed 72 wins in the 1995-96 season.

The Eastern Conference was lead by the Boston Celtics. The Knicks would be the 2nd best team in the conference.
The Lakers continued their dominance through the first round of the playoffs against the Bulls. The Bulls simply had no answer for the combination of Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry ...
... West. The Lakers swept the series and looked like the favorites to win it all.

Milwaukee looked dominant in their own right against Golden State. Lew Alcindor continued his high level of play and Golden State simply could not stop them. The series would only go 5 games as Milwaukee would win 4 games to 1.

The Boston series was a bit more competitive than either of the matchups in the Western Conference. Atlanta was not going to let Boston take the series with ease and managed to sneak out 2 victories against the Celtics. Atlanta did not have enough however, and the Boston Celtics took the series 4 games to 2.

The Knicks would take on Baltimore in another tough series in the Eastern Conference. This series went a lot like the series between Boston and Atlanta as Baltimore took home 2 victories, but the Knicks were too good and won the series in 6 games.
The Lakers and Milwaukee would square off in the Conference Finals in the Western Conference. This would be a classic matchup between two of the greatest big men in the history of the NBA. Milwaukee put up a good fight, but the Lakers were simply too good and won the series after 6 games.

Boston did not come into their series with the right mindset and the Knicks jumped out to an early lead in the series and they would not let go. The Knicks managed to end the series in 5 games and advanced to the NBA Finals to play against the Lakers.

While the Lakers had last 8 consecutive times in their Finals appearances, this year was different. The Lakers seemed poised to put forth a better showing and they did just that. The Lakers dominated New York in the series, allowing New York to win just 1 game. The Lakers won their first championship since 1954 and changed their perception as a team that could not win big games.
