1st Parliament Of Indian Student Council Leaders - Beginning Of A New Era

India has undoubtedly progressed after gaining independence and promises to become a super power in the coming few years. This, however, depends on the eradication of social and economic evils like poverty, illiteracy, terrorism, castes and corruption, which are currently hampering the growth of the country. There is a need for a radical move that will wake the youth of India who can not only bring their fresh ideas on the forefront but also help cleanse the country of the malpractices that threaten to destroy its harmony.
MAEERS MIT School of Government has taken a bold step in involving the youth towards achieving this goal. The first Indian Parliament Student Council Leaders, organized at the MIT Campus, Pune, from Jan 12-14, 2011, gave the participants got an opportunity to meet eminent members from all wakes of life - politics, those involved in social work and saving the environment, media, spirituality and others.
There were about 6000 students who participated in this Sansad. The participants of this meeting consisted of students from different Universities and Colleges, General and Joint secretaries involved ...
... in community service and others.
The 11 sessions organized at this venue concentrated on important issues like youth involvement in running the democracy, state of women, tackling terrorism, the role of the media, environmental concerns, increasing opportunities for the youth and other issues. Some of the notable speakers in this Sansad included former President APJ Abdul Kalam, Art of living Founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, NR Narayan Murthy, Chief of Infosys, IPS Officer Kiran Bedi, Rahul Bajaj chairman of Bajaj Auto and others.
The 11 sessions also included interactive sessions between the students and speakers followed by passing resolutions on the key topics. The main objective of this meeting is to enable the youth to formulate their views on these issues and bring in new ideas that can bring about the radical change required. The resolutions passed at these sessions are expected to be factored into the decision making process at the National level as well as International level and also passed on to UNESCO for deliberation.
It is expected that the resolutions passed at these session will be used to make policies and significant changes in the Government. Although this is the first attempt in this regard, it is definitely the beginning of a new era where the vision is to see the youth of today taking active participation in lending their thoughts and ideas to shape the Country into a better place for all.
