Over the years there have been several horses that have really grabbed the attention of the horse racing world. One of those horses was War Admiral.

War Admiral was a stallion that was born in 1934 from two other horses named Man o' War and Dam Brushup. War Admiral was bred to be something great. Man o' War was a talented horse that was very desirable for breeding. War Admiral did not end up with the same physical attributes as Man o' War, but he certainly inherited a lot of the talent that his father had.

War Admiral was actually undersized for a horse. He was 15 hands, two inches tall, putting him below the average horse at 16 hands. He looked a lot like his dam with a dark brown coat.

War Admiral was owned by Samuel D. Riddle. Riddle hired Charles Kurtsinger to be his jocky. Kurtsinger would stay with War Admiral for the entirety of his career. War Admiral was an incredibly successful race horse. Today horses are seen as being successful if they are able to pull in a couple of victories in their career at major events. The success for War Admiral all started in 1936 at the great American Stakes. War Admiral won his first race there and geared up for what would be the most memorable year of his racing career in 1937.

War Admiral's performance in 1937 was historically good. The most valued and sought after award in horse racing is the Triple Crown. The Triple Crown is earned by winning at the three biggest races that the United States has to offer. The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes make up the Triple Crown. War Admiral had an incredible year and ran great races at each of these events.

Through his great running War Admiral managed to take home the victory in each of the three legs of the Triple Crown. By winning these races War Admiral would become just the 4th U.S. Triple Crown Champion in the history of the sport. This was not the only award that War Admiral managed to win that year. The horse also was also the U.S. Champion 3-yr-Old-Colt and the United States Horse of the Year in 1937.

While 1937 was the best year of his career, 1938 brought more success to War Admiral's career. The horse managed to win the Saratoga Cup, Whitney Handicap, Wilson Stakes, Stars and Stripes Handicap, Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Queens County Handicap in 1938.

The horse continued in fame in the 1940's by earning the award of Leading sire in North America in 1945. In the 1960's War Admiral was named the Leading broodmare sire in North America in 1962 and 1964. To top things off the horse was named the 13th best horse of all time in the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century.

War Admiral entered the United States Racing Hall of Fame in 1958.
